When community come together for the love of animals — August 2025

“How does one shelter take care of 300 animals?!” 🤯

That was the reaction to our last post about the Funchal Public Kennel. The truth? It’s actually 314 animals**: **71 cats and 243 dogs. That is 14 more since our last visit, which says a lot about the ongoing need for love, care, and volunteers.

This time, Madeira Friends took the local bus and turned what could have been an ordinary Monday into an unforgettable afternoon of wagging tails, whiskers, laughter, and of course our favourite word after burpess: community.

Strangers turned friends (and temporary locals)

Two ladies who were only on the island for three weeks (yes, we’re already thinking on how to bring them back!) decided to add this experience to their Madeira journey. Alongside them, a mother-daughter duo joined, the daughter instantly won our hearts when she declared she wanted all the cats and dogs. We also had a singer who has made Madeira her permanent home.

What started as a group of strangers quickly turned into conversations, laughter, selfies and of course, cuddles with cats and dogs.

The journey: like true “Madeirenses”

To make it extra authentic, we hopped on the number 10 bus. The ride was surprisingly quick, followed by a slightly ambitious 15-minute uphill walk. Let’s just say… maybe skipping Saturday workouts isn’t the best idea. But with the stunning scenery around us, it was worth it. By the time we reached the shelter, we were buzzing with excitement.

A warm welcome

We were greeted by Stephanie Cords, a familiar face in both the Madeira Friends community and the shelter. A former long-term volunteer and proud adopter of two kennel dogs, she showed us around. Since our last Christmas Animal Drive in December 2024, the shelter had improved dramatically, more shade, bigger cages, and better divisions.

This transformation came thanks to support from the City Town Hall of Funchal and the new director, Ricardo Jesus. It was nice to see how much had changed.

Meeting the residents

Every dog had a story. Some barked desperately for attention, while others were shy and reserved. One sweet boy, found abandoned at the entrance of the expressway, completely melted our hearts.

The cat section was equally interesting. Classic cats, staring at us with a mix of curiosity and judgment. Some were total snuggle-bugs, while the kittens brought nonstop entertainment. One especially affectionate cat has already been adopted and is waiting to fly off to his new life in Lisbon.

Walks, puppies and fresh air

We got the chance to walk the dogs outside the shelter, giving them a break in the fresh air. We were also over the moon as we got to play with two adorable puppies (because who can resist?). By the time we caught the bus back down to Funchal, we all agreed: animals truly know how to lift your spirits.

“It was such a joy to join and voluntere with these amazing ladies! To help the volunteers and dogs gives such a good feeling. We walked the dogs, cuttled and played with them a bit. It is not only fun to help out but also to meet new people here on Madeira! We took the local bus to get there, so it was a good way to even explore the island a little. I would defenitely join again on this rewarding afternoon 🩷” Lea, Netherlands

Want to visit? Here is how

The Funchal Kennel is always in need of volunteers and supplies.

🕒 Opening hours:

📦 Donations always welcome: blankets, towels, cat beds, toys, and tinned food. It’s best to message the shelter a day before your visit so they can be ready.

Grateful hearts

We left with many photos, full hearts, and some good memories. More than anything, we felt grateful: grateful for the hardworking staff, the volunteers, and the chance to experience the shelter together for the love for animals.

Because in the end, that’s what Madeira Friends is about: community, connection, and giving back, even if its one paw at a time. 🐕🐈
